will be taking off for hawaii. i mean, his take off was -- i'm sorry? there is the plane. and that, of course, picture being worth 10,000 words. i was about to say, we will wave to the president, which is another obvious given to the fact that air force one is waiting to win its way westward to hawaii. this is not a prident to is overwhelmed by his failure to lead on this issue. it doesn't like it is now his issue, does this? i mean, it is over. now harry reid, mr. electric, and mr. obama get to go at it. >> look. advantage once again, to snatch the feed from the jaws of victory. the three of us on the next commercial break could figure this out. the point -- lou: the two of you could. i would report. >> look, they just want political mileage, and they are getting it. it will be done. it has to be done. then they will go on to the next one. but it may not be done until the market falls by another five or 10%. it seems as though policymakers want to be beaten with a stake in order to get something substantial accomplished in terms of long-term budget deficit reduction. lou: i can tell you, you

. >> gregg: will be the president be working on these issues during his christmas holiday in hawaii or is it golf and r&r and spending time with the kids? >> mostly r&r but on friday the president acknowledged there might not be time for any grand bargain. he scaled back for expectations for the rest of the year. one democrat said a larger deal is not impossible. >> we what we ought to do is take speaker's last offer, president's last offer and split the difference. that would be a package of about $2.6 trillion. you couple that with the $1.1 trillion that has already been done, that would be close to the $4 trillion we needed to stabilize the debt and begin to bring it down. >> reporter: to do that the president is demanding wealthy pay higher taxes. >> gregg: steve, thanks. >> heather: gregg, president obama is taking a break from the stress of fiscal cliff negotiations spending the holiday in hawaii. there is also a somber moment on his schedule. president and first lady attending a memorial service for daniel i inouye. >> he is leaving the fiscal cliff worries back home. we are

for christmas. the president's out in hawaii. i'm sure the staffs are working on it, but, boy, i have to say, like a lot of people, up till thursday, i thought there was, you know, lot of posturing, lot of jockeying, they were going to get a deal done because the alternative was so terrible. after republicans defeated their own speaker, speaker boehner's plan that would only have raised taxes on people making a million dollars or more, less than 1% of all taxpayers and they thought that was too extreme, i'm not sure we'll get a deal. you could see that in the markets on friday, which went down 100 points. >> another big issue that has everyone talking is what happened in newtown, connecticut, because that has sparked this gun control debate. no matter what side you're on, you'll be talking about that as well. >> we are, indeed. first of all, on the fiscal cliff, we've got two top senate leaders. we'll ask them about that. we'll also talk to them about gun control. and of course the big on that, since the terrible tragedy in newtown was the statement by wayne la pierre, top officials in the n

spoke at the white house friday before leaving for hawaii where he is now. but at the same time the president acknowledging there might not be time for any kind of a grand bargain. he scaled back his goals and pushing not for the big deal, but for middle class tax cut and extended benefits. a larger deal wouldn't be that hard to reach. >> what we ought to do is take speaker boehner's last offer, the president's last offer and split the difference. that would be a package of about $2.6 trillion. you couple that with the 1.1 trillion that will be done. that would be close to the $4 trillion needed to stabilize the debt and to begin to bring it down. >> and if no action is taken by the end of the year taxes go up for everybody. back to you, eric. >> we have to see. the clock is ticking. >> tick, tick, tick. more on the fiscal cliff negotiations. i am joined by congressman peter king from new york who is involved. congressman, great to have you here. >> great to be here. >> happy holidays. >> happy birthday. >> have i to ask you, what are you doing home when we are approaching the f

hawaii for a short christmas break. he returns to washington after the holiday. in egypt, the president is stepping down. this man announced today that political life does not agree with him and he'll go back to being a judge. it's the same day the egyptian people are voting for a second straight weekend on proposed changes to the country's newest islamist-backed constitution. the new president gave himself near absolute power. those are your headlines this hour. i'm don lemon, keeping your informed. cnn, the most trusted name in news. >>> it was one of the most important diplomatic missions in history. also one of the most clandestine and risky. four decades ago, henry kissinger, then president nixon's national security adviser secretly flew to china, beginning a string of meeting ises that would eventually open that isolated eastern nation to the western world. that opening checked soviet expansionism and in a sense was the beginning of the end of the cold war. >> that was the week that changed the world. >> it was also the beginning of china's entry into the world economy, which has

." >> thanks for having me. >> good to be with you. >> chris: before heading to hawaii for christmas the president laid out a new stripped down plan to avert the fiscal cliff. here is what it is. extend the bush tax cuts for people making less than $250,000. extend unemployment benefits for the 2 million people who will run out next month and delay the sequester of $110 billion in spending cuts next year. for all of the talk of $4 trillion in debt reduction this plan would only save $800 billion over ten years. senator conrad is that the best that washington can do over the next nine days and can you pass even that? >> look, chris, it may come to that but we can do better. and we should do better. this is an opportunity to do something that would be hugely important for the country. i mean my own belief is what we ought to do is take speaker boehner's last offer, the president's last offer, split the difference. that would be a package of about $2.6 trillion. you couple that with the $1.1 trillion that has already been done and that would be close to the $4 trillion we are needed to

becoming greece. >> today, despite the president being in hawaii, the fiscal cliff is still on the agenda. kristen welker is with the president in honolulu. good day to you, kristen. what are you hearing there? >> reporter: alex, good morning to you. white house officials say this is very much a working vacation, no word if president obama has actually spoke on the congressional leaders at this point. i can tell you that conversations are going on at the staff level. but the reality is that the hard work, the final touches probably won't be put on these bills or this bill, rather, that they're hoping to get until lawmakers, the president, return to washington. and of course that won't happen until after the christmas holiday. this has a lot of people worried, alex, because as you say there's not a lot of time left to get a deal done. president obama, house speaker john boehner, were very close to getting a deal. president obama had given a little on entitlement reform, house speaker john boehner had given a lit until terms of agreeing to increase taxes. but they just couldn't get to the f

left for his vacation in hawaii on friday evening, talked about a very pared down, stripped down plan. simply extend the bush tax cuts for people making $250,000 or less, extend unemployment benefits for 2 million people that they're going to run out for, and basically postpone all of the sequester, which would be 110 billion dollars in spending cuts in 2013. now, i'm just not sure i see how republicans are going to go along with that given the fact that you just had the plan b rejected which was going to set the marker not at 250,000, but a million and the speaker couldn't get the votes for that, so, why would republicans now go for the $250,000 that we've been rejecting all along. >> clayton: another animal house reference, it's like the young members of congress trying to get their pledge pin, you know, who are going along trying to vote for this. and they're not-- i mean, let's be honest, this is the reason they didn't get the votes, the 40 or 50 members who didn't want to go along with the speaker on this. you're right, chris. i mean, let's dive into that. how are they going to p
